Shepherd’s Pie

This is the ultimate comfort meal, trust me!

If there is one dish my husband constantly asks me to make, it is Shepherd's Pie. He loves the savory, saucy meat topped with fluffy, cheesy mashed potatoes. This dish is the epitome of comfort food, and it comes together so quick and easy.

My best friend growing up was born in England, and her mom would always make us traditional English & Irish dishes for dinner. These were meals I did not typically have in my house, but I was always SO excited to eat Shepherd’s Pie when her mom made it. When I lived in the Bay Area, there was a restaurant in San Jose that had the most delicious Shepherd's Pie. This dish truly is nostalgic for me.

I can't remember the first time I made Shepherd's pie myself, but I do know I've been making it for at least 10 years. I use ground lamb as the meat because I love the flavor of gamey meat. However, if you are not a fan, ground beef is a very easy and qualified substitution. I've also done 50/50 lamb/beef before as well. I've never tried it with Impossible Meat, but I'm sure it would be delicious. I also omit the peas. I don't like peas, ever, or in anything. But I can't have a dish without greens, so I add Kale. Trust me, my husband does not miss the peas, even though he LOVES them.

I prefer to make this dish in a cast iron skillet. I can make the meat sauce and finish the pie off in the oven without having to dirty another dish. I filmed an Instagram Reel of the making of this dish. Check it out, and leave a comment!
